IAVI Awarded Grants to Expedite AIDS Vaccine Development

The International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) has recently been awarded two new grants by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to expedite the development of promising AIDS vaccine candidates and other new biomedical HIV prevention tools. The grants provide for funding in an amount of almost US$60M over three and a half years.

Insights into the Development of Antibodies That Target a Large Portion of HIV Strains Could Advance Vaccine Design

A sub-Saharan African donor's blood has yielded remarkable finds that could be crucial in the search for an AIDS vaccine. An infected donor's immune system naturally made potent antibodies, which lab tests showed could effectively recognize and neutralize about 50 percent of all HIV-1 strains circulating around the world. HIV-1 is the most widespread HIV type globally. Researchers managed to observe and understand the process of how the immune system developed these antibodies.

IAVI Welcomes New Data from Dapivirine Ring Studies

The International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) welcomes new data from two late-stage clinical studies indicating that vaginal rings containing the antiretroviral drug dapivirine can safely help protect vulnerable women in Sub-Saharan Africa from HIV infection.
