The XVII International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2008) was held in Mexico City, Mexico from 3-8 August 2008. AIDS 2008 was the first time a country in Latin America hosted the Conference, and IAVI was there to participate in a series of events, as well as to report on the state of AIDS vaccine research and development.

Why the world needs an AIDS vaccine

Despite the international community's best efforts, the HIV pandemic continues unabated. In 2006, more than 39 million people were living with HIV worldwide. Over four million people became newly infected with HIV and an estimated 2.8 million lost their lives to AIDS.

A vaccine is a substance that is introduced into the body to prevent infection or to control disease due to a certain pathogen (any disease-causing organism, such as a virus, bacterium or parasite); the vaccine 'teaches' the body how to defend itself against a pathogen by creating an immune response.
