IAVI analyzes policies that influence AIDS vaccine development and advocates for their improvement. We research policies adopted by both global and national institutions, and cover a wide range of issues of significance to the AIDS vaccine effort. These include:
- Assessing how much is being spent globally on AIDS vaccine development, where that money is going, and which key areas of research require more support
- Influencing the formulation of incentives to draw relatively risk-averse commercial organizations—like pharmaceutical and biotechnology firms—into AIDS vaccine research and development
- Exploring the best approaches to managing and financing the global effort to develop an AIDS vaccine
- Projecting the future demand for an AIDS vaccine, and its potential impact on the pandemic
Our policy recommendations and quantitative studies have helped convince a variety of political leaders and public and nongovernmental organizations, among others, to support AIDS vaccine development. They have also played a key role in engaging drug companies and other commercial institutions in the effort.
