It isn’t entirely clear what a successful AIDS vaccine will look like, but designing it and evaluating its safety and efficacy in human trials is going to cost quite a lot of money.
Although many governments and philanthropic foundations have thus far supported this endeavor, their generosity will in all likelihood have to be sustained for many more years to come.
IAVI considers securing financing for AIDS vaccine research and development to be a top priority. Working with the AIDS Vaccine Advocacy Coalition (AVAC), the Alliance for Microbicide Development (AMD), and the UNAIDS Resource Tracking Unit, we keep close tabs on where all the funds for development of AIDS vaccines and other new HIV prevention tools are coming from, and where they’re ultimately being directed. Such studies help us to identify trends and gaps in financing, and inform the strategic blueprints we produce to help shape the global AIDS vaccine effort.
