This info sheet examines encouraging progress researchers have made in recent months toward the development of an HIV vaccine. These scientific advances include a clinical trial in Thailand demonstrating for the first time that a vaccine can prevent HIV infection in humans, the discovery of two new antibodies against HIV, and promising research showing that replicating vectors could provoke more effective immune responses against HIV than have so far been observed.
Vaccine preparedness is a comprehensive, partnership-based approach to help countries and communities involved in AIDS vaccine research and to generate support for such efforts in the global community. This brief describes IAVI’s approach to vaccine preparedness and the core strategies used to meet the challenges of conducting this work in low-income countries hit hardest by HIV.
