Frans van den Boom


Frans van den Boom, Ph.D., has extensive experience in the field of health services research and international development. As a researcher, Frans has focused primarily on mental health, and on HIV and AIDS. He is a founder of the AIDS Impact Conference, was co-chair of Track D for the 1992 International Conference on AIDS in Amsterdam, and serves on the board of Stop AIDS Now, the International Scientific Board of AIDS Impact, and the editorial boards of Psychology, Health and Medicine and AIDS Care. Before joining IAVI in 2001, Frans worked with the Netherlands Red Cross as deputy director and chief operating officer. In this position, Frans oversaw the development and management of the organization's programs, international policies and its 300-person staff. He has also served in key positions at the Blood Transfusion Council, the National Committee on Chronic Diseases and the Netherlands Institute of Mental Health. Frans, who also holds an MBA degree, has written and co-authored 10 books and more than 50 scientific articles on issues relating to HIV and AIDS, mental health and chronic diseases. From 2001 through 2007 he was responsible for IAVI's European Programme. Today he oversees the organization's entire portfolio of country and regional programs.
