Public Policy

The search for AIDS vaccines requires evidence-based policies that support and accelerate innovation in research and development. IAVI’s Public Policy Department researches and analyzes issues relevant to:

  • Making the case for a sustained commitment to AIDS vaccine development
  • The distribution and uptake of future AIDS vaccines, with an eye to maximizing both
  • Mechanisms for drawing public and private sector investment into the effort to develop an AIDS vaccine

The results of our research feed directly into IAVI’s advocacy efforts and its work with policymakers around the world.

IAVI’s Public Policy program is currently conducting research in a variety of areas, including:

  • Exploring ways to promote innovation in AIDS vaccine research. The rate of progress toward an effective AIDS vaccine depends as much on the smart organization and management of the effort as it does on its adequate financing. We investigate historic approaches to successful vaccine design to derive lessons on how to expedite AIDS vaccine development

  • Working with other organizations to explore innovative financing mechanisms for global health initiatives, with a particular focus on research and development activities

  • Modeling the potential impact HIV vaccines of varying efficacy could have on the AIDS epidemics in various countries. We share our findings with legislators and other policy makers who play a central role in devising national health policies
