The Executive Office includes the office of the President/ Chief Executive Officer and the Executive Vice President/ Chief Operating Officer and the Office of the General Counsel.
The President and Chief Operating Officer: Working closely with the Senior Management Team and the IAVI Board of Directors, these officers provide strategic vision and leadership to IAVI. The Executive team is also a primary point of contact for external relationships, such as those with the Board, donors and other stakeholders. It is also responsible for ensuring that IAVI meets the annual organizational objectives approved by the Board, and operates in a responsible and effective manner in all areas of its operations.
The General Counsel’s Office is responsible for two primary areas of our work:
- Identifying and managing legal and risk-related issues arising from IAVI’s global activities
- All business development activities
The Office of the General Counsel provides legal support and strategic advice to the organization at large. It participates in all aspects of IAVI’s operations, including structuring and negotiating agreements with partners (such as pharmaceutical and biotech companies, universities, clinical trial centers, governments and other non-governmental organizations), helping to anticipate and resolve disputes and to ensure that operations are consistent with applicable laws and regulations. It is also primarily responsible for providing advice on issues related to governance, the code of conduct and conflicts of interest.
The Business Development Group within the General Counsel’s office is responsible for the management of intellectual property generated by IAVI and its partners, for securing the rights to materials and intellectual property required by IAVI’s R&D programs and for guaranteeing access to those products in the developing world. It manages IAVI’s patent portfolio and provides counsel and training to IAVI staff on intellectual property matters. It also structures and negotiates the business related elements of IAVI’s agreements with industrial and academic partners, including the licensing out of IAVI’s intellectual property.
