Core Values

Our vision is a world without AIDS.

Our mission is to ensure the development of safe, effective, accessible, preventive HIV vaccines for use throughout the world.

IAVI was founded as a unique approach to overcoming the challenges of AIDS vaccine development and delivery. Our values embody our aspirations and guide our actions. To realize our vision and achieve our mission we must:

  • Treat each person with respect. We respect the dignity of each individual, and recognize each person’s merit and contribution to our mission. We strive for open and honest communication, constructive conflict resolution, and just and ethical management policies. We are committed to developing a civil, collegial, supportive work environment, where employees develop and share their skills, and are free to make suggestions.

  • Uphold high ethical standards. All of our work will be guided by the firm conviction that success can only be achieved through processes that maintain respect for the individual and human rights. This involves consideration around fundamental aspects of societies where we work including ethics, gender, cultural values, political situations, and overall quality of life. We commit to collaborating with country and international partners to speed access to a safe and effective AIDS vaccine, while also improving circumstances at the community level.

  • Function as a global, inclusive organization. We require diversity within our organization. We will strive to recruit and retain people from a wide variety of backgrounds, experience, and countries. We seek and value contributions from and partnerships with the groups, communities, and countries hardest hit by the epidemic, and we strive to have these voices represented in every aspect of our work.

  • Maintain appropriate focus on our mission. We commit all our resources to the development and access of an AIDS vaccine. We recognize and support the importance of the many other ongoing efforts to prevent and treat HIV around the world. We applaud these endeavors, and recognize that only through a combination of efforts can we both end the epidemic and create an environment where an AIDS vaccine will have the greatest impact.

  • Balance the urgency with the complexity of our mission. Developing and delivering an AIDS vaccine depends on innovation and tireless commitment. We embody these values in all of our projects through responsible risk-taking and uncompromising standards of excellence. At the same time, we anticipate that we will not succeed in every undertaking, and we pledge to learn from any failure we may encounter. We will pace ourselves, maintaining a balance between our personal lives and our work, so that we can effectively devote our energies and capabilities throughout the pursuit of our goals.

  • Remain accountable to those affected by our work. Out of respect to our staff, donors, partners, and those affected by HIV, we will use our resources in an economical, responsible way and ask our partners to do the same. We will proactively discuss our intentions, accomplishments, and failures. Where issues are complicated or liable to be misunderstood, we will treat these issues as challenges to be overcome, not as barriers to transparency.
