HIV has caused one of the most devastating pandemics in human history, claiming nearly 30 million lives. Millions more are newly infected with the virus every year. Vaccines could help stem the tide of the pandemic. These powerful and typically cost-effective tools of public health have been deployed to control and end many of the world’s leading infectious diseases. Yet devising an effective vaccine to prevent HIV remains one of the greatest scientific challenges of our time. Researchers have, however, made major progress
in recent years toward developing such vaccines.
